The Dix Hills District's firehouse, built in 1962,
had outlived its usefulness and ability to house modern firefighting
apparatus. Its location in an upscale, residential neighborhood called
for a facility that respected the families it protected. The firm
designed a new facility that allowed for the continuing operation
of the existing facility during construction. The new facility was
located behind and elevated higher than the old firehouse. The additional
frontage, buffers and landscaping, and overall design and use of brick
siding and asphalt-shingled roof created a design that is visually
more pleasing. The facility now has four double deep bays, a classroom,
ready room, office and kitchen. The facility also houses all the support
technology necessary to maintain this substation. The new firehouse
is set back far enough from the street to make its appearance blend
harmoniously with the neighborhood. Storm drainage, vehicle maneuverability
and all interiors were designed with a keen eye on the budget, durability,
functionality and aesthetics. |
