This historic 1930s Tudor-style North Shore firehouse
is typical of the architecture of the community it serves. A limited
floor-to-floor height, strict genre of style requirements, complex
program elements and tight budget drove the decision-making process.
The new two-story addition, with a basement, provided space for a
new bay containing a tower ladder, new kitchen, elevator, meeting
room, offices and a gym. The entire project was skillfully managed
within the available limited space. The scale and style of the addition
set a dynamic goal to balance the building visually, making it appear
as though it were the original. Off the rear of the building, a new
elevator addition was added to service all levels, and the site was
rearranged to accommodate more parking and better handicap accessibility.
The new addition complements the existing structure, blending in the
new functions and materials with the old. Renovation of the existing
bays by opening up the common wall, expanding the second floor and
completely upgrading all building mechanical, electrical, plumbing
and fire protection systems has created a facility that easily meets
modern-day fire service requirements |
