Porot Vivo: "A celebration of life; a feast for the eyes; a symphony of global delights"
Design Vision
The Design Teams intent was to launch “Porto Vivo” to the top of “Fine Dining” establishments on Long Island.
To accomplish this task we incorporated a global fusion of design elements that utilize high spirited and leading edge details while considering the multi-level space and the taste of the town. Working with and embellishing on the original structure and industrial aesthetic as part of our design vocabulary; along with contemporary and modern components, will serve as the backdrop for this “new traditional” space.
The traditional features and architectural elements such as rough hewn columns and beams, planked wood floors, decorative iron, vaulted ceilings, loft-like space and original brick and stucco are preserved and celebrated. The essence of the space is new in spirit with a modern style of organization.
Anticipation heightens as one enters through the impressive large entry doors into the grand atrium which begins with a journey up the majestic staircase that takes the viewer on a visual adventure through the lofty yet inviting spaces.
Once inside the viewer is enticed by the warm sumptuous materials, exciting dining, bar and lounge areas that incorporate large glass windows, French doors and balcony that are the portal to the vibrant town of Huntington.
Design Challenge
This project began with a highly recognizable, educated client that knew exactly what they wanted, a multi-level, multi-faceted, restaurant experience that would immerse the consumer in a multi-dimensional warm yet trendy space, offering an atmosphere that is polished yet rustic, urban chic yet down to earth, a style that says “New York” but can be anywhere on the globe.
With these conceptual parameters given, we began the task of reinventing a run down three story barn space and carving out all requisite spaces, dining, kitchen, bar and lounge, prep areas, to create a four level dining experience. In keeping with the architectural character we incorporated design elements throughout that would enhance the space. Plagued with lack of available space, maxed out footprint and archaic mechanical systems all necessary disciplines and needs were extremely difficult to design into the space without compromising the conceptual integrity we were hired to provide.
The three story space was sculpted to provide for audio and video, fire sprinkler systems, mechanical, plumbing, electrical and structural needs resulting in an extraordinary spatial experience that met all criteria and more. Being one of the first restaurant projects in Suffolk County to have extensive use of interior drip pans under all waste and drain piping resulted in a major change to ceiling heights and lay-out. We rose to the challenge with a space that offers versatility in lighting, materials, interior and exterior design elements. Every square inch of space was carefully calculated to allow for the client needs, code requirements and visual impact.
Lighting and sound presented a different set of challenges. We set out to incorporate lighting that was soft, unobtrusive and easy to read by without being bright. The result is a perfect blend where the lighting is subtle, and extremely comfortable, providing an eclectic mix of decorative fixtures along with general illumination. The sculptural multi-leveled space designed to include acoustical materials and surfaces provides an optimal environment in all areas. When a musician is performing in the lounge (mezzanine level), diners throughout still enjoy pleasant conversation while listening to live music.
The modifications to the exterior include a grand stucco, stone and glass tower entry, oversized French doors, stack stone detailing, balcony with architectural railing, contemporary awnings, eyebrow windows and bronze lanterns all come together to enhance the character of the building while adding a timely contemporary edge and a “new Huntington Hot Spot” the town could embrace. Special attention was paid to be sure that the exterior was in keeping with town compliant site work.
Visually the interior offers much for the patron to experience and explore. A soft handsome color palette combining deeply textured wall surfaces amid sumptuous leather upholstery studded leather walls, dramatic custom made booth designs are set amongst a backdrop of proprietary artwork and strong building materials creating welcoming chic yet casual setting.
Custom commissioned artwork with photography by “Jesse Kalisher” evokes images of ports around the world and large scale shadow boxes in metallic finishes help enhance the sculptural quality of the space. The window strategically placed in the entry atrium offers a glance into the wine cellar where private wine tastings are held.
Now open in September, 2009 this project has received accolades throughout the community and is proving to be a major success for our client. Having designed and help orchestrate “Huntington’s Latest Buzz”, makes this project a truly remarkable and gratifying experience.
